Luke 24:31-32 (ESV)
31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
The Resurrection Sunday didn’t end with just an empty tomb. Jesus was actively on his move to pursue his disciples. The whole week post resurrection and the following 40 days before his ascension, he never ceased to appear before the people. It was up to them to be aware of his presence. Divinity and humanity dwells within him, in which both these essences were revealed to the people to further reinforce their belief.
Let us walk on the road to Emmaus on the resurrection day of Christ with his disciples, following their conversation and emotion…(Read Luke 24:13-35) Feel the sentiment of that phenomenal aftermath of the resurrection.
The women were struck with fear yet overflowed with great joy. Some doubted and thought the women were talking nonsense. Some suddenly realized it was Jesus and fell down to worship him. Some were totally clueless of his identity despite inviting him into their house and dining with him. The reality of his presence was only brought forth through the revelation of the word together with the fellowship with him over the table. It was the power of the scriptures coming alive with his supernatural presence (“he vanished from their sight”) when the Scriptures were opened to them earlier, and reminded them the prophecies of old and the teaching of Moses.
“Their eyes were opened and they recognized him” during the partaking of the communion and realized their hearts were burning when the Scriptures were opened to them. This is the point of connection we need to experience the power of the reality of Christ. Sit down, invite him to the table like the psalmist (Psalm 23) and the disciples did, open up the Bible and read the word
until we see the word becomes flesh for us; for John 1:14 says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full
of grace and truth.”
“Father, give me the desire and the discipline to open up the bible and read it for myself. Let me know Jesus and make him known. In His name. Amen.”
